Overview & preparation

Getting around: the basic options

Use metro, DiDi, taxis or buses for the main journey. A shared pedal bicycle can cover a short final leg if your account, route and return point all work.

Before you set off

  • ✓Keep your destination address available in Chinese as well as English.
  • ✓Expect app, ticketing and payment requirements to vary.
  • ✓A metro station can have several exits; a pickup location can differ from the address you searched for.

When you need the actual next step

  • ✓Use the ride or metro action guide for booking, pickup, tickets, entry and recovery.
  • ✓For a shared bicycle, check a permitted destination parking point before unlocking. After locking, confirm the order has ended; a parked bike can still be charging.
  • ✓Do not accept unsolicited rides from strangers. Use recognized services and official airport or station signage.

From the station entrance to the correct street exit

  1. Identify the station and pass security

Compare the entrance's station name and line number with your map. Put bags on the security conveyor and collect all of them; follow staff instructions about liquids. With a suitcase, look for 电梯 / Lift, not only the nearest stairs.

  2. Enter with the method you chose

Tap one bank card or stored-value card on the reader; scan the live metro code if using the app. With a single ticket, follow the gate's ticket symbol. Wait for the gate to open and move through promptly. Do not tap two people through on one card.

  3. Read direction, not just line color

At the platform, compare the direction terminal and the next station on the diagram with your planned route. On loop lines, use the next stop to distinguish sides. Show staff: 我要去这里,这个方向对吗? (I am going here; is this the right direction?)

  4. Board and monitor the stops

Stand behind the line, let passengers exit and keep bags clear of doors. Match the in-car display to your next transfer or destination; don't board just because other tourists do.

  5. Transfer inside the paid area

Follow 换乘 / Transfer and the new line number. Check its direction again. Do not follow 出口 / Exit unless your route specifically requires an out-of-station connection; exiting may end the current fare.

  6. Exit using the same method

Use the exact card/device or metro-code account used on entry. Follow the ticket slot instruction for a disposable single ticket. If blocked, keep your ticket and ask at Customer Service beside the gates; do not jump the barrier or pay a second fare without resolving the first.

  7. Choose the street exit

Read the concourse exit map before going upstairs. Check road side, exit letter and lift. If a central-area exit is temporarily closed, show the destination to staff and use the signed alternative; don't cross a major road against barriers.

If this does not workNo signal underground? Use the route saved before entry. For an app-gate problem, show the entry record and destination to station Customer Service. A screenshot of a changing metro QR may not open a gate.
