Hotel check-in: what to prepare
Keep your passport and booking confirmation ready. Accommodation registration is a legal requirement, not an optional extra.
The basics

Finish the check-in, not just the payment
Match the reservation to all guests
At 前台 / Reception, show the confirmation and passports. Point to the arrival/departure dates. Ask reception to complete foreign-guest accommodation registration. Wait for passports to be returned after the required checks; keep a photo of the booking, not a substitute for the documents.
Separate room charges from a deposit
Ask: 这是房费还是押金？ (Is this the room payment or a deposit?) Check what was prepaid, any remaining balance and the currency. For a deposit, confirm the return method and expected release process, and keep the receipt.
Confirm the daily logistics
Ask which building/floor, how the key works, Wi-Fi name/password, breakfast place/time and checkout deadline. If Wi-Fi needs a mainland SMS you cannot receive, ask reception for the foreign-guest login or staff-assisted access; don't use an unknown person's login.
Check the room while help is available
Test the door lock, Wi-Fi and essential room facilities. If you booked twin beds, a non-smoking room or another specific feature, compare it now and show the booking to reception if wrong. Keep the hotel phone/address card for your return trip.
Plan luggage storage and checkout
If arriving early or leaving late, ask about charges and obtain a storage tag for deposited bags. Keep passport, money and medication with you. At checkout settle the itemized bill, return keys and retain the deposit-release or refund record.
